¹⁶ But their eyes were being held-back that they might not^[a] recognize Him. ¹⁷ And He said to them, “What are these words which you are exchanging with one another while walking?” And they stood [still], sad-faced. ¹⁸ And having responded, one— Cleopas by name— said to Him, “Are You alone^[b] staying in Jerusalem and did not know the things having taken place in it in these days?”
